Abstract:

The article focuses upon the resilience of family firms in shipping. It examines why such dynasties have been able to survive for generations and continue to do be significant players in the sector. The question is  addressed through a study of family businesses in the Norwegian shipping industry. it first discuss some of the theories in the extant literature on the factors that are claimed to be vital to the survival of family businesses. it then discuss the relevance of these theories for shipping by looking at four family firms in the industry.
